Apollo 17, launched by NASA on December 7, 1972, was the eleventh and final crewed mission of the Apollo program and the sixth and most recent time humans have set foot on the Moon. Commanded by Eugene Cernan with Command Module Pilot Ronald Evans and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt, the spacecraft returned safely to Earth on December 19, 1972.
