Apollo 15, launched by NASA on July 26, 1971, was the ninth crewed mission in the Apollo program and the fourth Moon landing, the first J mission with a longer lunar stay and greater scientific focus, and the first to carry the Lunar Roving Vehicle. Commanded by David Scott with Command Module Pilot Alfred Worden and Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin, Scott and Irwin explored near Hadley Rille across four spacewalks totaling about 18.5 hours and collected about 170 pounds of lunar samples before the crew returned safely on August 7, 1971.
