Yuri Mozzhorin was a Soviet rocket scientist and lieutenant general who served as director of TsNIIMash, the Central Research Institute of Machine Building and the Soviet space program's leading research and reliability-testing institute, from 1961 until 1990, one of the longest tenures of any senior Soviet space official. In that role he was responsible for independent technical assessment and reliability certification of Soviet spacecraft and launch vehicles, including the troubled N1 Moon rocket program and, later, the Energia heavy-lift rocket and Buran space shuttle, work that made TsNIIMash under his direction a central node connecting the Soviet Union's various competing design bureaus and their government overseers. A Doctor of Technical Sciences and professor as well as an engineer, he was among the small circle of senior Soviet space officials, alongside figures such as Kerim Kerimov and Sergey Afanasyev, whose identities and institutional roles were kept from public knowledge for most of the Cold War, and he was honored as a Hero of Socialist Labor and a laureate of both the Lenin Prize and the State Prize for his decades of service to the Soviet space program.
