Clouds of interstellar gas and dust that shine by their own ionised glow (emission nebulae and H II regions) or by scattering the light of nearby stars (reflection nebulae), often the birthplaces of new stars. An object belongs here when its cited article calls it an emission nebula, reflection nebula, H II region or diffuse nebula. It excludes dark nebulae, planetary nebulae and supernova remnants. Members are placed here from their own cited Wikipedia articles, each with a verbatim supporting quotation, so a reader can check why an entry sits in this group. The grouping forms part of the browse path for this section of the atlas.
