The astronomical observatory of Naples, Italy, sited on Capodimonte hill and founded on 4 November 1812, described as the oldest scientific institution in the city. Its neoclassical building, designed by astronomer Federigo Zuccari and architect Stefano Gasse, was completed in 1819 and originally housed a 17.5-centimeter Fraunhofer telescope, the largest refractor built up to that time; today, as part of Italy's National Institute for Astrophysics, it takes part in projects including the Solar Orbiter and ExoMars missions.

Observing Band FAQs
Was the Capodimonte observatory founded in 1807 or in 1812?
The Naples observatory dates from a 1807 decree; the new Capodimonte site was approved in March 1812 and its foundation stone laid on 4 November 1812.
Both dates belong to the story. The Naples observatory was established by Joseph Bonaparte with a decree dated 29 January 1807, in the old monastery of San Gaudioso on the Caponapoli hill, with Giuseppe Cassella as first director. After Joachim Murat became king of Naples, he approved on 8 March 1812 the foundation of a new observatory on the Miradois hill, not far from the royal palace of Capodimonte, and its foundation stone was laid on 4 November 1812.
