Dark matter is a hypothesized, invisible form of matter that does not interact with electromagnetic radiation. Its existence is inferred from its gravitational effects on visible matter, such as galaxy rotation curves and gravitational lensing, rather than from direct detection. In the standard cosmological model it makes up roughly a quarter of the universe's total mass-energy content, far outweighing ordinary visible matter.

Concept Domain Formulated YearSwiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky made the first substantial scientific inference of dark matter in 1933, applying the virial theorem to the Coma Cluster of galaxies and estimating it contained far more mass than was visually observable.
