Proteus is the second-largest moon of Neptune and the largest of its inner satellites, discovered by the Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1989 and named for the shape-shifting sea god of Greek mythology. It measures about 400 kilometers across and orbits Neptune in a nearly equatorial path at a distance of roughly 4.75 Neptune radii from the planet's center.
