Nereid is the third-largest moon of Neptune, discovered by the Dutch-American astronomer Gerard Kuiper in 1949, making it the second Neptunian moon found after Triton. It is notable for its unusually eccentric orbit and its comparatively large size for an irregular satellite, and it also shows large, still not fully explained brightness variations over long periods of time.
