Messier 91, also known as M91 or NGC 4548, is a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Coma Berenices and a member of the Virgo Cluster, discovered by Charles Messier in 1781. An error in Messier's recorded position left the object effectively lost for nearly two centuries until its identification with NGC 4548 was proposed in 1969 and became widely accepted; it lies roughly 63 million light-years from Earth.
