Messier 89, also known as M89 or NGC 4552, is an elliptical galaxy in the constellation Virgo and a member of the Virgo Cluster, discovered by Charles Messier in 1781. It lies roughly 50 to 60 million light-years from Earth and appears nearly spherical as seen from Earth, one of the roundest galaxies known, though a faint extended envelope of stars has been detected reaching well beyond its visible disk.
