Messier 53, also known as M53 or NGC 5024, is a globular cluster of stars in the constellation Coma Berenices, discovered by the German astronomer Johann Elert Bode in 1775 and independently found by Charles Messier in 1777. It lies about 58,000 light-years from Earth and roughly the same distance from the Galactic Center, making it one of the more remote globular clusters catalogued by Messier.
