Messier 23, also known as M23 or NGC 6494, is an open cluster of stars in the constellation Sagittarius, discovered by Charles Messier in 1764. It can be found with binoculars or a modest telescope under good conditions and lies in front of an extensive network of gas and dust with which it may have no physical association.
