Messier 10, also known as M10 or NGC 6254, is a globular cluster of stars in the constellation Ophiuchus, discovered by Charles Messier on 29 May 1764. Messier and later observers such as Johann Elert Bode described it only as a nebulous patch without stars, until William Herschel resolved it into individual stars with a larger telescope; the American astronomer Harlow Shapley made the first attempt to estimate its distance, though his figure of about 33,000 light-years was considerably larger than the modern value.
