Janus is an inner moon of Saturn named for the Roman god of beginnings and doorways. It was first identified by the French astronomer Audouin Dollfus on 15 December 1966, although it had unknowingly been photographed earlier by Jean Texereau, and later observation revealed that Janus shares a unique co-orbital relationship with a second moon, Epimetheus, a configuration later confirmed by the Voyager 1 spacecraft in 1980.
