The Hyades is the nearest open star cluster to the Sun and one of the best-studied star clusters known, located about 153 light-years away in the constellation Taurus. It consists of a roughly spherical group of hundreds of stars that share a common age, place of origin, chemical makeup, and motion through space, properties that have made it a key benchmark for calibrating the distance scale used across the rest of astronomy.
