The largest moon of Jupiter and the largest and most massive moon in the entire Solar System, discovered by Galileo Galilei on 7 January 1610 along with Io, Europa and Callisto. At about 5,270 kilometers across it is larger than the planet Mercury, though considerably less massive. It is the only natural satellite in the Solar System known to generate its own internal magnetic field, evidence often linked to a liquid, electrically conductive layer thought to lie within it.
