Fomalhaut is the brightest star in the constellation Piscis Austrinus, the Southern Fish, and one of the brightest stars in the entire night sky, carrying the Bayer designation Alpha Piscis Austrini. It is a class A main-sequence star about 25 light-years from the Sun, and since 1943 its spectrum has served as one of the stable anchor points used to classify other stars; it is now known to be part of a wider triple star system.
