Caldwell 1, also known as NGC 188, is an open cluster of stars in the constellation Cepheus, discovered by the English astronomer John Herschel in 1825. It lies close to the north celestial pole and is one of the oldest open clusters known, with age estimates ranging from roughly 5 to 6.8 billion years, making it valuable for studying how star clusters evolve and disperse over very long timescales.
