Algol, designated Beta Persei and known colloquially as the Demon Star, is a bright multiple star system in the constellation Perseus and one of the first non-nova variable stars ever identified. Its regular dimming, caused by one component periodically passing in front of the other as seen from Earth, made it the prototype of the eclipsing binary class of variable stars.
