Yi So-yeon

International Partner and Guest Astronauts

Yi So-yeon is a South Korean astronaut and biotechnologist who became the first South Korean to fly into space. Selected in 2006 as one of two finalists for the Korean Astronaut Program, she was named the primary candidate in March 2008 and launched to the International Space Station on April 8, 2008 alongside two Russian cosmonauts, spending about eleven days in space before returning on April 19. She later worked at the Korea Aerospace Research Institute before pursuing further study and teaching in the United States.
