Irina Solovyova

Soviet Union and Russia

Irina Solovyova is a retired Soviet cosmonaut who trained from 1962 to 1969 as one of five women chosen for the Soviet Union's all-female space squad. She trained at Star City alongside Valentina Tereshkova, Zhanna Yorkina, Tatyana Kuznetsova and Valentina Ponomaryova, and served as Tereshkova's backup for the Vostok 6 flight rather than flying herself. Before her selection she was an engineer and a champion member of the Soviet national parachute team.
