Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre is the lead rocket and launch vehicle research and development centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation, headquartered in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was founded on 21 November 1963 as the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station and was renamed in 1971, after the death of Vikram Sarabhai, the physicist regarded as the father of the Indian space program. The centre has designed and developed India own major launch vehicle families, including the SLV, ASLV, PSLV, GSLV and LVM3 rockets, and its roughly 4,577 staff also carry out research in aeronautics, propulsion systems, materials science and space physics.
