The SKA Observatory, or SKAO, is an intergovernmental organisation bringing together nations from around the world to build and operate cutting-edge radio telescopes that transform understanding of the Universe and deliver benefits to society through global collaboration and innovation. It describes itself as a next-generation radio astronomy-driven Big Data facility. The observatory has a global footprint, consisting of its Global Headquarters in the United Kingdom, two telescopes at radio-quiet sites in South Africa and Australia, and the associated facilities that support their operation. Once in operation it will be one global observatory operating two telescopes across three continents on behalf of its Member States and partners, intended as the leading research infrastructure for radio astronomy.
