Satish Dhawan Space Centre, known as SDSC, is the primary spaceport of the Indian Space Research Organisation, located on Sriharikota island in Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh, on India own east coast between Pulicat Lake and the Bay of Bengal, about 105 kilometers from Chennai. The centre became operational in October 1971 with the launch of a sounding rocket and was originally called the Sriharikota Range before being renamed on 5 September 2002 in honor of former ISRO chairman Satish Dhawan. It launches sounding rockets and India polar and geosynchronous satellites from three functional launch pads, and has supported the Chandrayaan lunar missions, the Mars Orbiter Mission and the Aditya-L1 solar mission.
