Rockwell International

Legacy Aerospace and Defense Conglomerates

Rockwell International was a major American manufacturing conglomerate active in aircraft, the space industry, defense, commercial electronics, automotive components, printing presses, avionics and other industrial products. Its predecessor, Rockwell Manufacturing Company, was founded in 1919 by Willard Rockwell, and in 1973 it merged with the aerospace business of North American Rockwell and was renamed Rockwell International. At its peak the company ranked twenty-seventh on the Fortune 500 list, with assets of more than 8 billion dollars, sales of 27 billion dollars and 115,000 employees, before splitting into several successor companies beginning in the 1980s, with its final 2001 split forming Rockwell Automation and Rockwell Collins.
