The Physical Research Laboratory, known as PRL, is India national research institute for space and allied sciences, supported mainly by the Department of Space, headquartered in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It was founded on 11 November 1947 by Vikram Sarabhai, beginning with cosmic ray research at Sarabhai own residence before expanding to formal premises, and it now conducts research across astronomy and astrophysics, atmospheric sciences, planetary sciences, Earth sciences, Solar System studies and theoretical physics, operating the Udaipur Solar Observatory and the Mount Abu InfraRed Observatory. The laboratory also offers a five year doctoral program in physics with specializations including quantum information and planetary geosciences.
