People's Liberation Army Astronaut Corps

Space Agencies of Asia

The People's Liberation Army Astronaut Corps, also known as the Chinese Astronaut Corps, is a deputy-corps grade unit of the People's Liberation Army Aerospace Force based in Beijing. It is responsible for the selection and training of the astronaut corps for Project 921, the Chinese manned space program. The corps was established on January 5, 1998, after a preliminary selection in October 1992 identified 1,506 pilots, of whom twelve were chosen as candidates. Seven more pilots entered as Group 2 in May 2010. The corps was part of the General Armaments Department until that body was disbanded in January 2016, and it then became part of the Strategic Support Force.
