Mojave Air and Space Port

Mojave Air and Space Port, formally renamed Mojave Air and Space Port at Rutan Field in 2022, is a general-use public airport in Mojave, California, administered by the East Kern Airport District since 1972. Originally opened in 1935 to serve local mining operations and later used as a Marine Corps installation during World War II, it received FAA spaceport designation on June 17, 2004, becoming the first facility licensed in the United States for horizontal launches of reusable spacecraft. Spanning nearly 3,000 acres with three runways, it combines flight testing, space industry development and aircraft maintenance and storage, and it hosted SpaceShipOnes privately funded suborbital flights, making it a hub for commercial space companies and experimental aircraft work.
