The McDonnell Aircraft Corporation was an American aerospace manufacturer based in St. Louis, Missouri, founded on July 6, 1939 by James Smith McDonnell. Best known for military fighters including the F-4 Phantom II, the company also built NASA's crewed Mercury and Gemini spacecraft capsules. McDonnell Aircraft merged with the Douglas Aircraft Company on April 28, 1967 to form the McDonnell Douglas Corporation.
