Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy

The Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR) is a research institute in Bonn, Germany, one of more than eighty institutes of the Max Planck Society, formed by combining the existing radio astronomy faculty of the University of Bonn, led by Otto Hachenberg, with a newly created Max Planck institute. It operates the 100-meter radio telescope at Effelsberg, opened in 1972, with facility expansions in 1983 and 2002. MPIfR also collaborates on the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment with the Onsala Space Observatory and the European Southern Observatory.
