Indian Institute of Remote Sensing

The Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, known as IIRS, is a government research and educational institution established in 1966 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, operating under India Department of Space. It was originally founded as the Indian Photo-interpretation Institute and traces its conceptual origins to a 1957 visit to the Netherlands by prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru; it was established with collaboration from the Government of the Netherlands and modeled on the University of Twente Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation. IIRS conducts research, higher education and training in remote sensing, eco-informatics and GPS technology for natural resource, environmental and disaster management, with courses affiliated with Andhra University and partnerships including UNESCO, the World Meteorological Organization and Wageningen University.
