The European Space Research and Technology Centre, known as ESTEC, is the European Space Agency own main technical facility for spacecraft and space technology development, located in Noordwijk in the western Netherlands. It was founded in 1968 under the agency predecessor, the European Space Research Organisation, and it tests nearly all equipment the agency launches, using facilities such as thermal vacuum chambers, vibration tables and propulsion laboratories. The site employs about two thousand five hundred people and also houses the Space Expo visitor centre, which draws more than one hundred twenty thousand visitors a year.
