The European Space Operations Centre, known as ESOC, is the main mission control centre of the European Space Agency, one of nine establishments the agency operates, located in Darmstadt, Germany. It was formally inaugurated on 8 September 1967 and directs operations of the agency uncrewed spacecraft across planetary, solar, astronomy and Earth observation missions, covering launch phase support, ground systems engineering, flight dynamics, software development and space debris studies. The centre employs roughly eight hundred people, including about two hundred fifty permanent staff and around five hundred fifty contractors.
