Convair, originally the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation, was an American aircraft manufacturer formed by the 1943 merger of Consolidated Aircraft and Vultee Aircraft, headquartered in San Diego, California. Purchased by General Dynamics in 1953 and operated as its Convair Division, the company built the Atlas rocket family used to launch Project Mercury's crewed orbital flights, the Atlas-Centaur launch vehicle for satellites and space probes, and the Centaur upper stage, the first rocket stage to use a liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen propellant combination.
