The China Academy of Space Technology, known as CAST, is a research institute affiliated with the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, located in the Haidian district of Beijing, that develops and manufactures Chinese spacecraft. It was founded on 20 February 1968 and built the Dong Fang Hong series of satellites, including Dong Fang Hong I, China first artificial satellite, which the academy launched on 24 April 1970. The institute employs more than ten thousand people and its spacecraft work spans China human spaceflight, lunar exploration and satellite programs.
