Zhurong is the Mars rover of the China National Space Administration, part of the Tianwen-1 mission that made China the second nation to successfully land and operate a rover on Mars. The rover touched down in Utopia Planitia on May 14, 2021, and studied the Martian surface, subsurface structure and atmosphere using cameras, ground penetrating radar and other instruments. Zhurong went into a planned hibernation for the Martian winter in 2022, but mission controllers were unable to reestablish contact with it afterward, and it is presumed unable to recover, possibly due to dust accumulation on its solar panels.
