Hayabusa was a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency robotic space probe launched in 2003 to visit the near Earth asteroid Itokawa, land on its surface, and return a sample to Earth. Despite suffering numerous technical failures during its mission, including damage to its ion engines and loss of attitude control, the spacecraft managed to briefly touch down on the asteroid in 2005 and returned tiny grains of asteroid material to Earth in a sample capsule that landed in the Australian outback in June 2010. It was the first spacecraft ever to land on an asteroid and return a sample from one, and its successor Hayabusa2 later repeated the feat at a different asteroid.
