Habitation and Logistics Outpost

Space Station

The Habitation and Logistics Outpost, or HALO, was a module planned as part of the Lunar Gateway, the small station that was to orbit the Moon. It was formerly called the Minimal Habitation Module and Utilization Module and was built by Northrop Grumman. Plans called for a Falcon Heavy rocket to launch it in 2027 already attached to the Power and Propulsion Element. NASA's Office of Inspector General reported that at cancellation NASA had spent nearly $1.9 billion on HALO, up from a contract value of $1.3 billion, and that delivery had slipped to a projected October 2026, beyond the original May 2025 commitment. The inspector general also reported that corrosion found in HALO's primary structure would likely have delayed delivery to July 2031. The module is now canceled.
