German-American physicist who came to the United States with Wernher von Braun's rocket team after World War II. He became one of the earliest serious theorists of electric ion propulsion for spacecraft, wrote the influential 1964 text Ion Propulsion for Space Flight, and served as associate director for science at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center during the Apollo era.
