Venera 1 was the first spacecraft to perform an interplanetary flight and the first to fly past Venus, launched in February 1961 as part of the Soviet Union Venera programme. It had originally been intended to impact Venus, but radio contact with the probe was lost before its flyby on May 19, 1961, so it returned only limited data, gathered while it was still in interplanetary space rather than near the planet itself.
