IKAROS

Space Probe

IKAROS is an experimental spacecraft built by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. It launched on 20 May 2010 aboard an H-IIA rocket alongside the Akatsuki probe and four smaller spacecraft, and became the first spacecraft to successfully demonstrate solar sail technology in interplanetary space. Its name alludes to the mythological Icarus, who flew too close to the Sun on wings of feathers and wax.
