Mars and Phobos Surface and Sample-Return Probes

Space probes meant to reach the surface of Mars or of its moon Phobos rather than to study the planet from orbit, such as NASA's Deep Space 2, a pair of penetrator probes meant to strike the south polar region of Mars, and Russia's Fobos-Grunt, built to land on Phobos and bring soil back to Earth. A probe belongs here when its cited article describes a landing, impact or sample-return attempt at Mars or Phobos. Both of these probes were lost before they completed their missions.
