The Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer, known as LADEE, was a NASA lunar exploration and technology-demonstration mission launched on a Minotaur V rocket on September 7, 2013. During its seven-month mission it orbited the lunar equator, using its instruments, including a dust detector, a neutral mass spectrometer and an ultraviolet-visible spectrometer, to study the thin lunar atmosphere and dust in the vicinity of the Moon, alongside a technology demonstration of a laser communications terminal. The mission ended on April 18, 2014, when controllers intentionally crashed LADEE into the far side of the Moon.
