A European Space Agency gamma-ray space telescope launched in 2002, its name short for International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory, built to observe some of the most energetic phenomena in the universe including gamma-ray bursts, black holes and neutron stars. Its instruments combine gamma-ray imaging with simultaneous X-ray and optical monitoring of the same targets.
