The Universities Space Research Association (USRA) is a private nonprofit corporation established on March 12, 1969, in Washington, D.C., created at NASAs request under the National Academy of Sciences to give American universities a formal mechanism for partnering with the government on space science research and education. Its founding mission centered on engaging the academic research community in analyzing lunar samples from the Apollo missions, and it has since grown into an association of 122 member universities that maintain graduate programs in space science or technology, supported by more than 200 administrative and scientific staff working across its institutes and research centers.
