GHGSat is a Canadian emissions monitoring company headquartered in Montreal, founded in 2011 by Stephane Germain to detect greenhouse gas emissions from industrial facilities using purpose built satellites. Its first satellite, the demonstration spacecraft GHGSat-D known as Claire, launched in June 2016 aboard the PSLV-C34 mission and was described as the first high resolution satellite able to measure carbon dioxide and methane emissions from any industrial site in the world. The company has since grown its constellation, launching three more high resolution methane monitoring satellites in April 2023 to bring its fleet to nine, and it now also flies aircraft mounted sensors and combines its own measurements with third party data to monitor methane emissions across industries including oil and gas, mining, agriculture and waste management.
