White Sands Test Facility

The White Sands Test Facility is a NASA rocket engine test facility and hazardous materials evaluation center in the western foothills of the Organ Mountains, about eleven miles east of Las Cruces, New Mexico. NASA established it on July 6, 1963, at the White Sands Missile Range, and the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center manages it today. The facility tests propulsion systems, including hypergolic and mono propellant hardware, and evaluates spaceflight materials, supporting the Space Shuttle program historically and the International Space Station program currently, with a staff of several hundred civil servants and contractors.
