The United States Space Force is the space service branch of the United States Armed Forces, established on December 20, 2019 as one of the six armed forces and one of the eight uniformed services operating under the Department of Defense. It traces its lineage to military space programs developed by the Air Force, Army and Navy during the Cold War, and currently operates as part of the Department of the Air Force alongside the Air Force as a coequal service, an arrangement intended as temporary ahead of a planned fully independent Department of the Space Force.
