The Goddard Space Flight Center, known as GSFC, is a major NASA space research laboratory located about 6.5 miles northeast of Washington DC in Greenbelt, Maryland. Established on May 1, 1959 as NASA first space flight center, it employs about 10,000 civil servants and contractors and is one of ten major NASA field centers. It is named for American rocket propulsion pioneer Robert H. Goddard.
