Armstrong Flight Research Center

The NASA Neil A. Armstrong Flight Research Center (AFRC) is a NASA aeronautical research center whose primary campus sits inside Edwards Air Force Base in California. NASA considers it the agency's premier site for aeronautical research. AFRC has operated some of the most advanced aircraft built, and its test flights delivered several aviation firsts: the first crewed airplane to exceed the speed of sound in level flight, the Bell X-1; the highest speed reached by a crewed, powered aircraft, the North American X-15; and the first aircraft to fly on a pure digital fly-by-wire system, the F-8 DFBW.
